About the project

bbqplanner has been live at bbqplanner.nl since 5 October 2026. It started as Receptify, an idea for a recipe platform. I narrowed it down to one thing it has to do well: plan one barbecue, from the shopping to the moment the food is on the table. The app is in Dutch.

What I built

  • Quantities per guest, with separate rules for adults and children
  • A menu from 56 dishes, put together by Claude — or by a built-in chooser when the AI is unavailable, so the app always works
  • A shopping list per shop
  • A timeline that counts back from the moment you want to eat
  • Sharing a plan with a link

Technology

Plain JavaScript without a single external dependency, with a small Node server. It runs as a locked-down service that may only write to its own data folder. On every change a check script tests 100 random menus against five fixed rules.

Result

An SEO score of 98 out of 100 on the first audit, and 90 on Google PageSpeed for mobile. Launched in October on purpose: that gives Google half a year to get to know the site before the barbecue season starts.
